How to Convert PDF to Markdown
Convert PDF documents to Markdown that AI reads easily. No installation or sign-up.
When you drop a PDF straight into AIs like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, tables and columns often get scrambled and page clutter like headers and footers sneaks in. Convert it to Markdown (.md) with the tool above and you hand over only the body text, page by page. Conversion happens only inside your browser, and files never go to a server.
Done in 3 steps
- Drop your PDF file into the converter above. Drag and drop or click to choose — conversion starts automatically.
- Copy the converted Markdown or download it as a
.mdfile. Each page is marked with## Page Nso the structure stays easy to follow. - Paste it into your AI chat or upload the
.mdfile. The AI now reads your document accurately.
Why convert to Markdown?
- Structure stays as text — headings and lists are written with Markdown symbols, so the AI does not have to guess the layout.
- Page clutter drops out — body text is extracted page by page and handed to the AI.
- Fewer tokens — without layout data, the same content takes fewer tokens. The longer the document, the bigger the difference.
- Processed in your browser — files are never sent to a server, so sensitive PDFs never leave your device.
How is this different from giving the PDF to the AI directly?
When you upload a PDF straight to an AI, it reads every page as an image too. That is accurate, but it uses a lot of tokens.
- 5–10× fewer tokens — a PDF read directly costs roughly 2,000–7,000 tokens per page (text + image), while Markdown is text only, so a few hundred tokens per page will do.
- Markdown is enough for text documents — for reports, papers, and handoff docs, the AI can read the Markdown alone, at a fraction of the cost.
- There are limits — when the visuals are the point (charts, diagrams, scanned pages), Markdown cannot carry everything. For those, upload the PDF directly.
Frequently asked questions
Can't I just upload the PDF to ChatGPT directly?
You can, but tables and columns often get scrambled and page noise creeps in, so the AI misses the structure. Converting to Markdown (.md) first hands over only the clean body text.
Are my files sent to an external server?
No. Conversion runs inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so sensitive PDFs never leave your device.
Are scanned (image-only) PDFs supported?
Not yet. Image-only scans have no text to extract and would need OCR (text recognition), which the converter does not have yet.
Does it handle PDFs with lots of tables?
Body text comes out reliably page by page. Complex tables, however, may not keep their full structure.
Is there a cost?
It is free. You can use it right away without installing anything or signing up.
